How to build a simple transformer circuit for kids?
I would want to build a simple transformer circuit for kids / educational use. Since I don't want to play around with the 120VAC from my wall outlet and hurt myself, I bought a 120VAC-to12VAC transformer from Radioshack for my primary voltage, and my goal is to apply the simple theory of Vs/Vp = Ns/Vp to demonstrate how number of wire turns can affect the voltage, and step down the voltage to say, 6VAC; I looked up eHow (http://www.ehow.com/how_8436024_build-own-transformer-kids.html) and followed the instructions but it didn't seem to work. Also the instructions didn't mention whether I can stack my turns of wires into layers (because if I have to wrap 200 turns of wires in a single layer I would need a very long bolt) and whether I should wrap the wires in clockwise / counterclockwise directions; I did more research and realized that it can go deep into electrical engineering / transformer design calculations. I don't want to go that in-depth - All I want to do is a simple demonstration. Can anyone help? Thanks for the reply. The transformer 120VAC 60Hz for primary, and 12.6VAC 300mA for secondary. My typo. Should be Vs/Vp = Ns/Np.
