Unemployment occurs when a person is available to work and seeking work but currently without work.The prevalence of unemployment is usually measured using the unemployment rate, which is defined as the percentage of those in the labor force who are unemployed.

The unemployment rate is also used in economic studies and economic indices such as the United States' Conference Board's Index of Leading Indicators as a measure of the state of the macroeconomics.

Though there have been several definitions of voluntary and involuntary unemployment in the economics literature, a simple distinction is often applied. Voluntary unemployment is attributed to the individual's decisions, whereas involuntary unemployment exists because of the socio-economic environment (including the market structure, government intervention, and the level of aggregate demand) in which individuals operate.

Structural US unemployment is caused by a mismatch between jobs offered by employers and potential workers. This may pertain to geographical location, skills, and many other factors. If such a mismatch exists, frictional unemployment is likely to be more significant as well.

Productivity gains in steel may reduce the number of jobs in steel, but they create jobs elsewhere (if only by lowering the price of steel, and therefore releasing money to be spent on other things); advanced countries may lose garment industry jobs to developing-country exports, but they gain other jobs producing the goods that those countries buy with their new export income. To observe that productivity growth in a particular industry reduces employment in that same industry tells us nothing about whether productivity growth in the economy as a whole reduces employment in the economy as a whole.

Unemployed individuals are unable to earn money to meet financial obligations. Failure to pay mortgage payments or to pay rent may lead to homelessness through foreclosure or eviction. Unemployment increases susceptibility to malnutrition, illness, mental stress, and loss of self-esteem, leading to depression. According to a study published in Social Indicator Research, even those who tend to be optimistic find it difficult to look on the bright side of things when unemployed.

There is a connection between economic growth and unemployment. There is a connection between growth and inflation. Therefore, commonsense (and financial theory) goes, there must be a connection between inflation and unemployment. A special measure of this connection is the Non Accelerating Inflation Rate of Unemployment (NAIRU). Supposedly, this is the rate of unemployment which still does not influence inflation.

High unemployment can encourage xenophobia and protectionism as workers fear that foreigners are stealing their jobs.[citation needed] Efforts to preserve existing jobs of domestic and native workers include legal barriers against "outsiders" who want jobs, obstacles to immigration, and/or tariffs and similar trade barriers against foreign competitors.

The ILO describes 4 different methods to calculate the unemployment rate:

* Labour Force Sample Surveys are the most preferred method of unemployment rate calculation since they give the most comprehensive results and enables calculation of unemployment Statitics by different group categories such as race and gender. This method is the most internationally comparable.

* Official Estimates are determined by a combination of information from one or more of the other three methods. The use of this method has been declining in favor of Labour Surveys.

* Social Insurance Statistics such as unemployment benefits, are computed base on the number of persons insured representing the total labour force and the number of persons who are insured that are collecting benefits. This method has been heavily criticized due to the expiration of benefits before the person finds work.

* Employment Office Statistics are the least effective being that they only include a monthly tally of unemployed persons who enter employment offices. This method also includes unemployed who are not unemployed per the ILO definition.

Unemployment may have advantages as well as disadvantages for the overall economy. Notably, it may help avert runaway inflation, which negatively affects almost everyone in the affected economy and has serious long-term economic costs. However the historic assumption that full local employment must lead directly to local inflation has been attenuated, as recently expanded international trade has shown itself able to continue to supply low-priced goods even as local employment rates rise closer to full employment.

Assignment to 75th Ranger Regiment?
I have completed my RASP packet. All there is left to do is have my CO and 1SGT sign my letter of recommendation and have my CO sign my 4187. My current unit has only made people serve 1 year before going to another unit since I've been here. However, recently it was announced that they are requiring 2 years at this duty station until they will release you to another unit. My question is, does this pertain to Regiment. Can my 1SGT and CO refuse to sign my letter of recommendation to hold me at this unit? I've been told by some that going to Ranger Regiment is career progression, and my coc is not allowed to prevent me from attending RASP, Selction, and other things of that nature. I have 0 negative counselings and have literally not got in trouble once. Their only reason for not signing my letter of recommendation would be to hold me here. Once they sign my letter of recommendation and 4187 I send the completed packet to Regiment and it is completely out of my units hands (from my current understanding). I was also told that if this happens to contact the Regimental Recruiter and they could take care of it. Obviously, that would be a last resort. The only reason I'm asking on yahoo as opposed to emailing the recruiter is because I do not want to bother him until I have to. I have not been refused yet. I'm just curious as to what other people have to say to maybe make this weekend a little less anxious until I can turn it in to be signed. Thank you for your help. "Career Advancement" may be the right term instead of "progression" Also, the way people leave my unit is by selecting a "Requisition" in the Assignment Satisfaction Key on AKO. This is what they have begun turning down. Dwell time is 1 year on station by the Army's standards. The 2 year thing is basically my units SOP. dumaz, I'm not trying to doubt my coc, just kind of want to get some insight just in case. I appreciate yall's answers... Alexander, very true. However, I've heard Regiment has a little more power than most units because they fall under SOCOM. And actually, the 4187 "does not have to be signed by the CO, but is recommended." So the biggest thing would be the letter of recommendation. Honestly, I probably shouldn't have even posted this question and just been patient to see what my coc says, but whatever.

What unit will i be going to when i transfer from active army to reserves?
I am coming up on my ETS date and am trying to figure out what reserve unit I will be going to when I return home to Ohio. My contract says I have 3 years in a reserve component, and I haven't been able to get my questions answered with my current unit. I am a 13B, which is field artillery, and I can't seem to locate any field artillery nits in Ohio. Please help!

what kind of car loan programs does the military have?
i'm active duty US Army and i just got told I'm PCSing in 2-weeks. there was some paperwork that was supposed to go through that was going to allow me to ETS from my duty station, but instead I've just been informed today that I'm in fact not ETSing and i'm PCSing. 1 word to describe my feelings: Surprised. if, in fact, I don't get to ETS from this duty station either, and they're just as lazy as my current unit, I was wondering what kind of loan options are available in the military for active duty soldiers? I don't have very good credit. Everyone has heard the story or had it happen to them where they have a girlfriend (or boyfriend) when they are young and their credit is building, then she does something drastic and the person who this will fall back on has to suffer. Well, that's me. Since I have been in, i have paid off any outstanding debt but I still have another 2 years until it will fall off my credit. I have been serving overseas where credit and credit cards aren't used. If you buy a car over here, you do it with your orders and your pay grade. So, on my voyage back to America, I now need things like a cell phone, a car, and a bunch of other things. I'll be stationed in Fort Riley, KS and my wife is going to college in Orlando, FL. Needless to say, i will need something for either her to drive up in, or me to drive down in, and something that will last in the winter. If i would have known I would be PSCing here sooner I would have prepared and saved but I'm put in a terrible position and i need to act quickly. Again, if i end up ETSing from there, because they are on it with the paperwork, I won't be getting a car. I'll be getting on the next flight back overseas where I already had a better paying job lined up. This is just in case I do get pushed aside again.

Army; Missing Personnel Records, Appropriate for IG?
Hello I am Active Duty Army and I came to my current unit September 2010. My unit is currently finishing a BRAC movement of which I am not a part of. I am staying in a rear detachment element at the original base until I PCS. To explain my question better I need to give a run down of my inter-battalion transfers: oSeptember 2010 ~ November 2010 - HHC (QRF) oNovember 2010 ~ February 2011 - B Company (At this point my Company began to prepare for the BRAC move, and those of us not leaving were moved to rear detachment) oFebruary 2011 ~ April 2011 - B Company Rear D oApril 2011 ~ May 2011 - C Company oMay 2011 ~ June 2011 - HHC Rear D oJune 2011 ~ Present - BDE Rear D oSometime this week or next I will be moving to a completely different Brigade until I PCS Here is the problem: My personal records are missing, the entire folder is gone. No PT cards, weapon cards, or orders for awards. I have always made my own copies of everything until I came to this unit, but this unit had a different mission and it was impossible for me to get to the training room to do it and the NCO's didn't listen. Now BDE and Battalion S1 have both said they don't have any of my records, but the HHC training room guy said he had them at one point but then someone from the B Company training room came and got my folder saying I was leaving with the Company, I wasn't. I called B Company training room (who has already made the move) and Sgt Doe answered the phone, and he talked to me like I was a complete idiot then gave the phone to Spc Doe who didn't even bother to look for my records. Just said he doesn't have them. After a few minutes of thinking about what had just happened, I called back and Sgt Doe answered and again spoke to me like I was stupid. I once again explained that everything I had done in this Battalion is gone and someone from B Company had gone to HHC just before the movement and picked my records up thinking I was going with the Company. He sighed, then said he'll look for it and call me back. I never received the call back. I am going to call them tomorrow one last time, and if I get the same kind of lacks-a-daisy response or if they still say they don't have them I want to take this up the chain. I have already taken this to my 1st line supervisor a few times, who had nothing to say. So it's time to go higher, and that presents a problem in itself. I don't know who higher is. I just came to BDE Rear D last week but haven't gone to PT or any other formations because I'm on a separate detail. And sometime this week or next I'm going to a whole nother Brigade. Where it will be so much harder to get anything. I'm normally not someone who makes a big deal of anything, I just Soldier on. But these are my records, things I did, things I earned, things I need. So that's a very detailed background of my situation, it's basically all jacked up. I want to take this higher, but if I am unable to because of this continuous moving around..is that appropriate for IG? I feel as though my problem is being brushed aside by everyone, especially the people who are supposed to care about my problems (NCOs), and the people who's job it is to keep my records (training rooms, admin guys). Thank you for taking the time to read all of this. //EDIT// Like I said, I have no idea who higher is. This unit is so jacked up that those of us who came here haven't in-processed or had any kind of welcome. Don't know who my Section Sergeant is, Platoon Sergeant, 1st Sergeant, SGM, or any of the Command. No one knows what the hell is going on, and since we're not at any formations because we're at this detail, we have no one to talk to. Any of us. We're on our own until someone tells us we're moving to this other Brigade at some point in time, a point in time that's soon but no one knows when.

Digital licenses. Surely laws and rights exist? If there is, what are they?
I live in the United Kingdom and I would like to know why there is no laws and regulations with digital licenses. This is regarding video game licences such as games and additional content. I own a Microsoft Xbox 360 and I have found a few things which are misleading on their website, which apparently misleading is against the law anyway. But, an issue I do have is they say in a few paragraphs it is 4 months to transfer licenses to another console, then on another paragraph they say it is 1 year. I did call them, they said it is one year, and the website has a mistake. (In my opinion, I find strange for a multi-billion dollar company selling millions of consoles to have a mistake like that) I think it is unfair because I have spent hundreds of pounds buying digital content like games and additional content for games, what gives them a right to dictate what I can and can't do with them? (at the end of the day, it is not like I am giving the content and licenses to other people) Reason why I ask this is because, I know several people that have owned several consoles that have gone wrong, and they've purchased another because sending it to Microsoft costs a fortune, then you have to wait weeks and weeks, so buying a new one is less hassle. Hypothetically I could transfer my licenses to my current unit, 5 months later it could break, buy another, and I can't transfer stuff again for a while. I think it is so unfair and ridiculous and yet they are able to get away with this? Please give detailed answers. Thanks in advanced for any answers provided.

I have been deployed twice. Once with my last unit and once with my current unit. I have no desire to wear my current unit patch.

how much does it cost to replace a whole house AC unit?
Current unit is a Rheem 10 SEER model RAKA 048JAZ built in 1997. House size is 2 story, 2150 sqft. The furnace is only 4 years old and all the ducting is fine. The unit was turned on for the first time this past weekend and after running for some undetermined amount of time (minutes - not hours), the breaker trips. Resetting the breaker allows operation for more minutes before tripping again. Resistance has increased and I'm guessing it is the compressor motor.
